6 September 2009 - Riding the Marches, Canongate
The ancient tradition of Riding the Marches in Edinburgh was revived in 2009 after an absence of over 60 years. Riding of the Marches in Edinburgh was first recorded in 1579 and was held on a regular basis until 1718. Since then, only a “one off” ride has been held in 1946 to mark the end of the war. Around 250 horses and riders took part in the 2009 ride. Riders headed through countryside on the South of the City into the Pentlands then back to the Braid Hills. The cavalcade rode into the city centre for the finale of a procession up the Royal Mile to the Mercat Cross, where the declaration was made to the Lord Provost.
